The trap is over-correcting. Mauritanian nights in the interior can drop 20 °C or more below the daytime peak. Specifying an extremely hard binder to survive the heat produces a pavement that cracks under nightly thermal contraction. The right answer is a harder-than-average grade, not the hardest available — or a modified binder where the daily range is genuinely extreme.

A note on oxidized grade selection
Many suppliers quote oxidized bitumen 85/25 for African waterproofing by default, because it is the global volume grade. In Mauritania that is a borderline specification. Take the peak ambient of 45 °C and add roughly 35 °C for a dark roof surface in full Saharan sun: the membrane sees close to 80 °C, which sits inside the softening band of 85/25. Sheets soften and flow at the laps.
95/25 or 105/35 is the safer specification for Mauritanian roofing, and the price difference is small against the cost of a failed roof.

Mauritania has a long Atlantic coastline but only two ports that matter for cargo of this kind.

Beyond the coastal cities, everything moves by road across long, sparsely served desert routes. The Route de l’Espoir east from Nouakchott toward Néma runs well over a thousand kilometres. Trucking cost and transit time inland can rival the ocean freight, which is why the packing decision matters more here than in most markets.

Storage in Saharan conditions
Cargo often waits in a yard at Nouakchott while clearance completes, and a steel drum in direct Saharan sun reaches 70 °C or more on the shell. That will not damage penetration bitumen quickly, but it stresses seams and drives an expansion cycle that loosens bungs — the main route for water ingress, which becomes a boil-over hazard when the material is later heated.
