Barite

General Description of Barite Powder

Barite is a mineral composed of barium sulfate (BaSO4).The high specific gravity of barite makes it suitable for a wide range of industrial, medical, and manufacturing uses. Barite also serves as the principal ore of barium.  Between 69 to 77% of baryte worldwide is used as a weighting agent for drilling fluids in oil and gas exploration to suppress high formation pressures and prevent blowouts. An additional benefit of baryte is that it is non-magnetic and thus does not interfere with magnetic measurements taken in the borehole, either during logging-while-drilling or in separate drill hole logging. The overwhelming majority of the barite that is mined is used by the petroleum industry as a weighting material in the formulation of drilling mud. Barite increases the hydrostatic pressure of the drilling mud allowing it to compensate for high-pressure zones experienced during drilling. The American Petroleum Institute (API) has established specifications for the use of barite in drilling mud.
Barite is one of the most beneficial industrial minerals with chemical formula BaSO4. Barite is also known as Heavy Spar and chemically consists of Barium Sulfate. Barite powder with high purity and brightness is called White Crystal Barite.
Most barite produced is used as a weighting agent in drilling muds. These high-density muds are pumped down the drill stem, exit through the cutting bit and return to the surface between the drill stem and the wall of the well. This flow of fluid does two things: 1) it cools the drill bit; and, 2) the high-density barite mud suspends the rock cuttings produced by the drill and carries them up to the surface.

The high filling properties of barite powder can be applied to all coating series, such as all types of primer, thick slurry coating, etc., with low surface area and particle size division and mobility, which make barite powder with low wear resistance during processing. Barium sulfate is recommended for automatic primer surface layer, even when high filling is also maintained. Good uniformity and smoothness.

In the paint industry, barite powder can as the filler and increase film thickness, strength and durability. The paper industry, rubber and plastics industry also use barite as filler, which can improve the hardness, wear resistance and aging resistance of rubber and plastics.

The applications concern radiations shielding in hospitals and nuclear facilities. In this work, the use of Tunisian barite powder form in the composition of concrete was investigated, substituting sand partially or totally.
other applications of Braite Powder in plastics, clutch pads, rubber mudflaps, mold release compounds, radiation shielding, television and computer monitors, sound-deadening material in automobiles, traffic cones, brake linings, paint and golf balls.

Benefits of Barite Powder Grade

  • Clean. (less impurity)
  • High whiteness.
  • Excellent dispersibility.
  • Not easy to agglomerate

Usages of Brarite Powder

  • Plastic Industry
  • Paper Industry
  • Paint and Coating Industry
  • Pharmaceutical Industry
  • Brake Lining Industry
  • Rubber Industry

Plastic Industry:

Barite powder is mainly used in plastic industry as a filler material. This application leads to increased abrasion resistance as well as firmness and solidity of the product. also As a stable chemical filler, it can enhance the strength, weatherability and gloss of plastic products.

Paper Industry:

Non qualitative white powder. Non toxic, not soluble in water, soluble in smoking sulphuric Acid, slightly soluble in boiling hydrochloric Acid. Chemical property is stable, it’ll reduce to Barium Sulfide when heat with carbon. As a stable and high whiteness chemical filler, it is cost and material saving. Paper products can be given excellent smoothness and fineness. Furthermore, this product can improve the service life of the grease mesh of paper. Refined Barite powder is used in paper industry to enhance the whiteness of the paper surface and increase its covering capacity and resistance.

Paint and Coating Industry:

In the paint industry, barite powder can as the filler and increase film thickness, strength and durability. Lithopone pigment is also used to make white paint, which has more advantages in indoor use than lead white and magnesium white. Barite for paint industry requires sufficient fineness and high whiteness. Using crystal barite powder in this industry increases the brightness of paints. It is also used to adjust the thickness of the paint and improve its durability.

Pharmaceutical Industry:

This high-purity form of barite is used in the gastrointestinal tract. Basing its x-ray protection property, the outline of the gastrointestinal tract thus becomes visible allowing clear gastrointestinal examination. It is also applied in medical industry as a radio-opaque solution for imaging the interior of the stomach and intestines.

Brake Lining Industry:

Barite powder is used as a filler material in manufacturing brake linings. this produce able to guarantee the safety of products due to no harmful substances. Furthermore, it has acid resistance, alkali resistance, high temperature resistance without losing gloss, and perfect weather resistance. Brake pads grade barite with high purity can enhance the strength of the automotive parts and resistance to acids and alkalis of the automotive parts.

Rubber Industry:

Using barite powder increases the longevity and durability of rubber products. Using it as a filler in manufacturing waterproof products leads to significant reduction in costs. Another application of barite powder in this industry is in manufacturing covers and casing.
