General definition Gilsonite in paint
Natural Bitumen or Gilsonite as been used for a long time in the paint industry. This material is used in paints with a bitumen base. The high nitrogen content of Gilsonite increases the adhesiveness and the stability of the Gilsonite against ultraviolet light. This product is mainly used in coating the exterior surface as also creating resistance against acids, it is used as the coating for car chassis and coating of metal structures.
Gilsonite is added to bitumen-based paints to increase hardness, adhesion. UV stability, and water and chemical resistance. Gilsonite paint formulations are often used on automobile frames and radia-tots. Gilsonite is also an ingredient in wood stains.
use of Gilsonite in Paint
Gilsonite or Asphaltite has been used for a long time in the paints & stains industry.
Due to the unique chemical and physical qualities of Gilsonite, it can lend useful characteristics to paints and polishing finishes. The high nitrogen content of Gilsonite increases the adhesiveness and stability against ultraviolet light.
The paint applications, Gilsonite is usually used in combination with bitumen (asphalt). In most cases, if Gilsonite is used alone, the final paint will be very hard and brittle after drying. If normal straight-run bitumen is used alone, the finished paint is too soft and tacky.
In addition to imparting hardness to the paint, Gilsonite is also increasing the paint’s: 1. adhesion; 2. gloss; 3. chemical resistance; 4. water resistance; and 5. body. For hardness, Gilsonite has a zero 0 penetration (at 25°C; 100 gm, 5 sec.) compared to the 60-70 pen, 80-100 pen or softer bitumen commonly available from petroleum companies or asphalt manufacturers.
Combination Gilsonite with bitumen for paint use
In paint applications, Gilsonite is usually used in combination with bitumen (asphalt). In most cases, if Gilsonite is used alone, the final paint will be very hard and brittle after drying.
Benefits of Using Powder Gilsonite in Paints and Coatings
1. Improved Durability :Powder Gilsonite increases the toughness of paints and coatings significantly, hence providing great resistance against abrasion, corrosion, and environmental factors. This is very critical for industrial and outdoor applications where surfaces are exposed to different kinds of damages.
2. Better Adhesion :The adhesive properties of Powder Gilsonite enhance the adhesion capacity of paints and coatings on metals, concrete, and wood. As a result, the finishing will last much longer and be more durable.
3. Improved Water Resistance :Amongst peculiar properties that Powder Gilsonite possesses is that of being resistant to water. Coatings and paints containing Gilsonite offer improved protection against moisture when compared with other coatings, hence preventing water damage and prolonging the life of the coated surface.
4. Cost-Effective :Powdered Gilsonite in paint and coating applications can be economizing, considering its high efficiency and the improved performance of the finished product. This will again bring down the maintenance cost by increasing the reapplication intervals.
