Oxidized Bitumen 95/25

Description of Oxidized Bitumen 95/25

Oxidized Bitumen 95/25 is a semi-solid, air-blown bitumen manufactured by oxidizing penetration grade 60/70 with hot air. It boasts better thermal stability, a higher softening point, and reduced temperature sensitivity compared to conventional penetration or viscosity grade bitumen. This makes it fit for demanding applications in construction, waterproofing, insulation, and more.

Applications of Bitumen 95/25:

Construction & Civil Works:
Used for waterproofing, as a concrete additive, joint sealing, and in roof membranes to enhance durability and resistance to water.

Industrial Manufacturing:
Applied in paints, lacquers, varnishes, adhesives, corrosion protection coatings, and paper production for improved performance and protection.

Automotive & Electrical:
Utilized as undercarriage sealant, sound-deadening mats, insulation materials, and for cable lamination to provide durability and reduce noise.

Public Works:
Used in pipe coating, sealing hydraulic structures, binding artificial turf, and creating anti-slip paving surfaces to ensure safety and longevity.

Manufacturing Process

Bitumen 95/25 is manufactured through a controlled air-blowing process in which hot air is introduced into liquid penetration-grade bitumen at elevated temperatures. This procedure initiates a series of chemical reactions primarily oxidation, dehydrogenation, and polymerization that significantly alter the molecular structure of the base bitumen.

During oxidation, oxygen molecules react with the hydrocarbons, leading to the formation of polar functional groups such as ketones, carboxylic acids, and sulfoxides. These new functional groups enhance the final product’s viscosity, rigidity, thermal stability, and adhesion to various surfaces. Simultaneously, polymerization increases the molecular weight, which improves elasticity and durability, especially under thermal stress and mechanical load.

The final result is a semi-solid bitumen grade with improved resistance to aging, water, and chemical attack making it suitable for applications such as roofing, waterproofing, and industrial insulation materials.

Storage & Safety

Store the product in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and sources of ignition. Keep it sealed in its original packaging to avoid contamination. When handling, always use appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, and heat-resistant clothing. Avoid overheating during heating processes to prevent the release of fumes, and ensure proper ventilation is maintained in all work areas for safety.

Oxidized Bitumen 95/25 vs. 90/40

Oxidized Bitumen 95/25 and 90/40 differ primarily in their softness, flexibility, and ideal climate applications. The 95/25 grade has a softening point between 95–100°C and a penetration value of 20–30 dmm, offering moderate flexibility and suitable heat resistance for moderate temperature climates. It is commonly used in waterproofing, industrial coatings, adhesives, and concrete additives.

On the other hand, the 90/40 grade is softer and more flexible, with a penetration of 40–50 dmm and a slightly lower softening point of 90–100°C, making it ideal for roofing, general waterproofing, and colder climates. This grade provides higher durability in harsh weather conditions and is frequently applied in roofing membranes, insulation, and road construction. Choosing between these two depends largely on the specific environmental demands and flexibility requirements of the project.

Oxidized Bitumen 90/40

Oxidized Bitumen 90/40

Oxidized Bitumen 90/40, or blown asphalt, is a semi-solid industrial bituminous product resulting from air-blowing hot air over penetration bitumen (most typically 60/70 grade).

The softening point of the bitumen is increased and its penetration value decreased through this process, so that the material can be utilized in applications requiring high heat resistance, water-resistance, and hardness.
