Abstract of Gilsonite Uses

Gilsonite or Natural Bitumen is a pure hydrocarbon, with a melting point of 165°C.The mineral is a natural bitumen and geologically a petroleum based solid and therefore extremely compatible with petroleum bitumen. When blended, a very intimate molecule of Gilsonite and bitumen is formed, one that takes on some hardness and durability of Gilsonite while still retaining the flexibility of the Bitumen.
The dull, black appearance of weathered gilsonite resembles coal, whereas the surface of freshly broken gilsonite is shiny and resembles obsidian. Gilsonite is distinguished by its solubility in organic solvents, low density, and brown streak when rubbed on paper.

Gilsonite Uses in Drilling Mud Additive

he addition of specially-treated Gilsonite to water-based drilling fluids helps minimize hole washout by stabilizing troublesome shale and sealing off highly permeable sands while reducing torque and drag.
The drilling fluid loss control or mud is supplied at the surface of the well in large earthen pits or metal tanks and is pumped from these into the borehole through the drill pipe and the drill bit to the bottom of the hole. The mud returns to the surface between the drill pipe and the borehole wall, bringing with it the drill cuttings.
The circulation of the mud serves not only to carry the cuttings to the surface but also to cool and lubricate the drill bit, thus making possible the further effective penetration of the bit into deeper geological strata. In conventional drilling operation a drilling mud based on bentonite or other materials such cane fiber, ground walnut hulls, sawdust, etc.

Gilsonite Uses in Cementing

Gilsonite Cementing is used in bonding slurries (Slurry means, it is a mixture of solids denser than water suspended in liquid, usually water. The most common use of slurry is as a means of transporting solids, the liquid being a carrier that is pumped on a device such as a centrifugal pump. The size of solid particles may vary from 1 micron up to hundreds of millimeters) to provide density control.

Ink & Paint:

Gilsonite is added to bitumen-based paint to increase hardness, adhesion. UV stability, and water and chemical resistance. Gilsonite paint formulations are often used on automobile frames and radia­tors. Natural asphalt is also an ingredient in wood stains. For Paint, If added to asphaltite paints and varnishes, Gilsonite’s unique qualities improve their roughness, gloss and chemical and weather resistance.

Gilsonite and Gilsonite resin, derived by solvent extraction of raw Gilsonite, arc used as carbon black wetting agents for black news ink and heat set and gravure ink.In addition to wetting and dispers­ing the carbon black pigment, Gilsonite or Gilsonite resin binds the pigment to the paper. yielding the high-gloss print that resists rubbing off.

Gilsonite can be used in the manufacture of paints. This material is used in paints based on bitumen. The high nitrogen content in the Natural asphalt increases tackling properties and stability against ultraviolet radiation. This product is mainly used for painting the exterior surfaces and to create acid resistance. It is used for painting the chassis of cars and metal structures.

Natural Asphalt can be used as the first carbon wetting agent in the black ink for newspapers and magazines. High concentrations of gilsonite are used in printing inks for newspapers. Basically, this material is used for dispersion of carbon black particles which make up the printed black ink. Moreover, it can be used in paints for wood as a dark brown paint. Due to its unique chemical and physical properties, gilsonite can transmit useful features to paints and polishing agents.

Road Construction:

Many construction processes are controlled by comparing the desired product, conceived during design, to the product produced during construction. The asphalt pavement construction process is often controlled in this manner. Control is often based on testing of components and assemblies of materials, the construction process, and the finished asphalt pavement. The success of the asphalt pavement construction project is usually judged based on how well test results produced during construction compare with criteria considered representing the desired product conceived during design.

Gilsonite resin is used by asphalt producers, road paving engineers and paving contractors who are concerned with PG specifications, high performance, and cost effectiveness. Gilsonite, long known as a bitumen reinforce and the hardening agent, also offers a unique combination of high performance and economy for high-stress paving, as well as preservation applications. A significant benefit of Gilsonite is in producing road pavement mixes of higher stability than conventional ones.

In Foundry and Refractories, for molding high-value metals there is more attention to factors such as finishing. Gilsonite can be a superior carbon additive replacing the traditional Sea Coal which has low Carbonic value compared to Gilsonite Specifications.

Natural Bitumen is also used as a carbonized additive for molding sand, which creates a smooth sheet on gray casting products. At a temperature lower than that of coal, it makes the material unstable, thereby improving the process of separating the metal from the mold. Moreover, the mold surface becomes smooth and clean. Natural Bitumen can be used as a supplement or replacement for bituminous coal or other conventional carbonated additives in molding. The physical properties of the Natural Asphalt sand are similar or superior to those of bituminous coal at much lower levels of additives. Natural Asphalt improves sand density and the demand for water and strength (green, dry, hot and burnt). Natural Asphalt has the same overall volatility, and bituminous coal, but the amount of the additive is thrice as lower.

Asphalt:

The mixture of Gilsonite (Natural bitumen) into road asphalt relates to a base stock composition comprising a blend of natural bitumen and a rubber latex residue. The base stock may be used alone as a paving material or emulsified to form a natural bitumen emulsion having a variety of uses. The mixture of natural bitumen enforces asphalt against rutting and thickness of the asphalt with becoming thin.
