Cutback Bitumen SC-250

Description of Cutback Bitumen SC-250

Cutback Bitumen SC-250 is a slow-curing asphalt used in pavement construction and treatment. It is composed of penetration grade asphalt cement and a slow-volatility diluent or cutter, meeting ASTM D2028-97 specifications. SC-250 and SC-70 are cutback asphalts that resemble residual refinery products, commonly used as heavy fuel oils. They are also known as “road oils.”

SC-250 is dissolved in solvents of kerosene, which is added as a cutter or cutback agent to reduce the viscosity of asphalt. This reduces the bitumen’s viscosity, aiding in the construction of seal coats in road pavements. The cutback agent evaporates from the seal coat, becoming a negligible component a few months after application. However, significant amounts of the cutback agent may result in an unwanted long-term softening effect.

Cutback Bitumen SC-250 Application

Cutback Bitumen SC-250 has wide usage in road construction and maintenance activities where increased penetration and adhesion to aggregates are required. It is ideally used in applications such as primer sealing, wherein it is used to enhance the adhesion of the road foundation to the subsequent asphalt layers. The reduced viscosity of SC-250 makes it particularly well-suited for cold weather use because it allows for smoother application and better wetting of the surface. This bitumen is heavily utilized in the production of seal coats, where it helps to form a strong, smooth, and resistant surface for road pavements.

Apart from application on surface treatments, Cutback SC-250 can also be best utilized in the manufacture of patching mixtures, making it the best choice to be utilized for repairing damaged road surfaces. It can further be utilized in stockpiling mixtures to ensure the bitumen remains workable even when stored for longer periods. SC-250 is utilized primarily in spraying techniques, which provides even distribution on road surfaces and effective coverage and prolonged protection. Its excellent adhesion properties and light handling make it an essential product in the maintenance and construction industry of roads.

Cutback Bitumen SC-250 vs SC-70

The main difference between Cutback Bitumen SC-250 and SC-70 Fluid asphalt their viscosity and application fitness. SC-250 has moderate viscosity, thereby making it good for surface dressing, prime coat, and repairs in less rigorous climates, wherein an even cure rate is a requirement. SC-70, however, has much lower viscosity, making its application easier when cold and rapid penetration. It is commonly used for chip seals and dust control on gravel roads. SC-250’s higher viscosity provides better adhesion and longer life in warmer temperatures, and SC-70 is better suited for those uses where quick curing and quicker workability are required.
