Cutback Bitumen MC-800

Description of Cutback Bitumen MC-800

Cutback Bitumen MC-800 is dissolved of bitumen in solvents of kerosene. In many countries, kerosene and other volatile petroleum-derived products are added as a cutter or cutback agent to bitumen to reduce (or cutback) the viscosity of the bitumen.

The diluent temporarily reduces the viscosity of the asphalt cement for ease of handling and application. Cutback MC-800 is used in the road maintenance industry where it is used as a prime coat of the base course prior to placing the bituminous surface course.

Medium curing is the most common category in cutback bitumen, among which, MC-800 grade has the highest demand. MC-800 is a medium curing cutback bitumen that contains 75% bitumen and has the lowest viscosity among all grades.

Cutback MC-800 is a type of dissolved Bitumen. To produce this type, solvent oils such as kerosene are used in order to change bitumen into dissolved bitumen or liquid pitch, so that, during the consumption process, the solvent oil evaporates and bitumen residue to obtain the desired adhesion. In many countries, kerosene and other volatile petroleum-derived products are added as a cutter or cutback agent to bitumen to reduce (or cutback) the viscosity of the bitumen. The mixture obtained may be called cutback bitumen.

MC-800 is medium curing (MC) cut-back asphalt consisting of penetration grade asphalt cement and diluents or cutter of medium volatility. The diluents temporarily reduce the viscosity of the asphalt cement for ease of handling and application.

Our MC-800 Cutback Bitumen complies with cutback petroleum asphalts of the Medium-Curing type for use in the construction and treatment of pavements as per ASTM D2027-13 reapproved in 2004.

Application of Bitumen MC-800

Cutback Bitumen MC-800 is a slow-curing, high-grade bitumen that has the primary application in road pavement construction and maintenance. The primary use is in penetrating prime coats, where it is used for treating granular surfaces such as aggregate base courses. MC-800 penetrates the base material to provide a very good bonding surface for subsequent asphalt layers, thus ensuring enhanced adhesion and long-term performance of the pavement. This process is particularly important for pavements that will undergo heavy traffic or environmental stresses, as it increases the overall strength and durability of the pavement.

Other than prime coating, Cutback Asphalt MC-800 is widely applied in patching mixes and stockpile mixes. It easily mixes with aggregates to produce strong patching materials that are highly suitable for patching damaged road surfaces. MC-800’s slow-curing characteristic also renders it suitable for cold mix applications where setting and compaction cannot be attained instantaneously. Further, this bitumen is widely used in the manufacture of asphalt pre-mix, which allows for the production of uniform, high-quality asphalt mixtures that are easier to handle and spread at construction sites. Its flexibility, along with the fact that it also improves adhesion and bonding strength, has made MC-800 a compulsory-use material in construction and repair of roads.

Cutback Bitumen MC-800 vs Cutback Bitumen MC-250

The main difference between Cutback Bitumen MC-800 and Cutback Bitumen MC-250 lies in their viscosity and applications. MC-800 is less viscous, which makes it more convenient to apply and faster curing and hence suitable for dust control, chip seals, and surface treatments on unpaved roads or in cold climates.

MC-250 is more viscous, with higher durability and adhesion in warm climates. It is typically used for prime coating, maintenance coating, and surface dressing, where a slower cure is needed for stronger bonding and long-term performance. While MC-800 is designed for quicker application and curing, MC-250 provides more resilience and longer-lasting performance in a wide range of paving applications.
