Gilsonite Powder
General Description of Gilsonite Powder
Gilsonite is naturally bulk form. At the request of the customer, it comes in the form of a conventional or micronized powder with various mesh.
Micronized powder, as its name implies, is micron powder and most of its aggregation compound is typically below 20 microns. In order to establish the scale of the measurements of the powders and the masses of the soil, the size and particle size of the micron scale is used as the standard mesh or mesh scale. Of course, each application has its own specific Mesh. For example Gilsonite with 200 mesh has high solubility it is very suitable for drilling and asphalt.
Gilsonite is our trademarked brand name for uintaite, a naturally occurring solid hydrocarbon used to enhance the performance of critical applicators across multiple industries, including oil and gas, ink, paint, construction, Asphalt, and foundry.
Gilsonite is naturally occurring, non-hazardous and non-toxic. It is a very pure resinous rock, formed of a complex combination of different kinds of hydrocarbons. This unique natural combination, rich in nitrogen and beta-carotenes and low in sulfur, is what makes Gilsonite so special.
Some companies claim to offer “Natural Bitumen” from other parts of the world, but these products are simply misidentified in order to take advantage of Gilsonite internationally recognized quality and proven performance. Because these other materials are not true unitaites, they have inferior performance due to their different physical and chemical properties. If it isn’t Iranian, it isn’t Gilsonite.

Gilsonite is a naturally occurring form of asphaltite and a type of solid hydrocarbon bitumen. This product is a natural hydrocarbon resin with many properties that is used in asphalt and even ink and printing paints and is used in more than 160 products from drilling cements to chemical products, foundry sand additives and a wide range of chemical products in various forms. Natural gilsonite is usually compared to natural asphalt road compared to heavy oil asphalt, also known as asphaltite, unitite and asphalt.
To use Gilsonite on asphalt, the amount of ash in it does not matter. The presence of ash in gilsonite is not an unpleasant factor and is even used to improve asphalt by mixing it with other additives. Some experiments show that the presence of sulfur compounds in Gilsonite during asphalt concreting makes asphalt more resistant, so the presence of sulfur in Gilsonite is an important and good factor for mixing it with asphalt. As a result, it is very suitable for mixing with gilsonite asphalt.
One of the special and effective features of Gilsonite is that the designed road is less sensitive to high temperatures and deformation. Gilsonite can be used directly in a hot mix plant without additional equipment. Other benefits of gilsonite include road reinforcement that lasts longer than conventional roads that may last 10 years. Gilsonite produces stronger asphalt with better traction and durability that can last up to 25 years. Asphalt from Gilsonite has a high resistance to grooving. Gilsonite increases the viscosity of asphalt and ultimately makes roads more resistant to deformation and even fatigue at high temperatures, unlike other corrective materials or RAP-based high-quality asphalts.

Gilsonite Powder- Asphalt Powder Production
RAHA GILSONITE. Co is a leading Iranian manufacturer of micronized Gilsonite Powder.
RAHA Group started manufacturing of Gilsonite powder in 2011 at.
Today RAHA Group. Co has wide experience in handling of Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen products and offers it’s the widest range in Iran Industrial use. For industrial uses, we have several grades suitable for all kinds of industries and applications. We offer coated as well as un-coated powders and Lump forms used in various applications for rubber, latex, drilling muds and other specialized products. Our want show is in the field of mineral processing, and more particularly deals with a process for converting lump Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen into a micronized powder.
processes for the production of micronized Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder are dangerous and energy inefficient. Micronized Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder is quite often presently produced by pulverizing Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen lumps in mechanical milling equipment. Particularly in circumstances where very finely sized particles are acquired, conventional milling results are dependent upon substantial energy consumption. As such, if it was possible to determine a method of production of micronized Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder which either used means other than mechanical milling or a mechanical milling process that significantly decreased the energy requirement, it would be desirable from an economic perspective.
We can provide a micronized Gilsonite powder product wherein 95% of the particles in the Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder product is less than about 75 microns in size. In addition to the novel method of production of Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder disclosed herein, the micronized Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder which is the product of the process of the present invention represents an advance in the production of this product over the state of the art. The product which is produced using the method of the present invention, micronized Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder, will be comprised of particles of the relatively consistent size and a very small micron measurement. Micronically sized Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen particles have significant commercial utility and benefits.
In addition, the Micronized Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder of the present invention will be of an increased quality or purity insofar as the impurities generated from milling equipment will not be present. In addition to the micronized Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder of the present invention, the intermediate micronized Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder cake is also a product which may have commercial utility and which is produced with significantly less energy and with the excellent quality compared to products available in the prior art.
Prior art methods of production of Gilsonite powder have typically concentrated on mechanical milling processes. Mechanical milling of lump Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen, particularly where the desired effect is to mill that product to a powder of a small particle size has many limitations including the safety of the process itself as well as that mechanical milling of this nature consumes large quantities of energy and is hard on the milling equipment itself.
The micronized Gilsonite powder recovered from the process of the present invention could either be packaged or stored for use in this form or could be blended with additional ingredients.
Blending of the micronized Gilsonite/Natural Bitumen powder in question with other ingredients dependent upon its end-use will again be a conventional technique or use conventional equipment as will be understood by one skilled in the art and on that basis, the specifics of a blending step are contemplated within the scope hereof.

Gilsonite Powder in Asphalt
The use of modifiers to improve the performance of bituminous road paving materials is increasing worldwide. These additives range from polymers and fibers to lime. One product is now being considered very seriously by road paving engineers and paving contractors who are concerned both with high performance and cost-effectiveness. This product, gilsonite resin, has long been known as a bitumen reinforcer and hardening agent. New evidence, both from the laboratory and from a fast-growing body of fieldwork, demonstrates that gilsonite offers a unique combination of high performance and economy for high-stress paving applications. The main benefit of gilsonite is in producing road pavement mixes of much higher stability than conventional ones. A unique, natural hydrocarbon, high in asphaltenes and nitrogen compounds, gilsonite is a granular solid that is fully compatible with bitumen. It can be melted into hot bitumen, or it can be added during hot mix manufacture. In either case, gilsonite dissolves easily in bitumen and requires only a slight increase in mixing time to achieve a uniform, easily workable hot mix. The increased stability of gilsonite fortified pavements makes them more resistant to deformation problems, such as rutting and shoving and increases the pavement’s load carrying ability. In addition, laboratory tests and field results show that improved deformation resistance can be obtained while the pavement retains much of its original ductility and ability to resist low temperature cracking. Other positive benefits include increased resistance to water stripping and aging.
Natural Bitumen Powder in Drilling Mud Additive
Gilsonite Improves Drilling Efficiencies, Wellbore Stability, Filer Cake Devel Opment. The primary use of Gilsonite today is as an additive in drilling fluids and cement slurries that are utilized in the drilling of oil and gas wells. It is also used in hard resin printing inks for newspapers and magazines, in producing sand molds used in the foundry industry, and as a modifying agent in asphalt used for road paving.
Gilsonite is the preferred fluid loss control agent for use in oil-based drilling fluids. It provides shale stabilization superior to other additives and also functions as a malleable plugging agent that effectively seals off permeable zones as they are drilled.
Gilsonite also is an excellent fluid loss agent for use in water-based drilling fluids. When pre-treated with a surfactant to enhance dispersion, Gilsonite provides the same benefits in water-based fluids as it does in oil-based fluids – fluid loss control, shale stabilization, and lost circulation prevention.
Due to its high softening points (400-450°F), Gilsonite is especially effective in drilling fluids used to drill in high-temperature environments. Gilsonite provides excellent fluid loss control and shale stabilization even at these elevated bottom-hole temperatures.
Gilsonite is effective at sealing off permeable formations even when drilling such zones at a highly overbalanced pressure differential. In this manner, Gilsonite helps prevent the occurrence of stuck pipe and stuck logging tools across these zones.
Gilsonite is used in cementing slurries to provide density control, scouring action for mud removal, and to support compressive strength development. Gilsonite has a unique reaction with shale which improves cement bond development and strength.
