General Description of Natural Bitumen
Natural bitumen is a natural resinous hydrocarbon. Natural Bitumen is the same as the Gilsonite mineral, in fact, there are many different names for Natural Bitumen used all over the world.
Natural Bitumen is a must have addition for Ink, Foundry, Asphalt, Paint & Stains, Construction and Oil and Gas industries. Mineral Bitumen in mass is a shiny, black substance; it is brittle and can be easily crushed into a dark brown powder.
Iran possesses some of the richest mines of Natural Bitumen, which are used in many industries, including road construction, the paint industry, polish and insulation of tanks and tubes and molding. Natural Bitumen or Gilsonite is also known as Natural Asphalt, Asphalting, and is soluble in petroleum asphalt solvents.
Gilsonite, produced from bituminous rocks and it is a change after more than millions of years of natural mineral precipitation , under pressure and geological changes in the form of mining Having broken from the fine granular powder , light brown , where the asphalt content of about 80% to 85% , the rest are kind of limestone minerals.
Natural Asphalt In most of the drilling processes, special liquids or muds are applied to reduce the temperature and the friction in the drilling holes and in the rig. Drilling mud is a lubricant in this process.
Application of Natural Bitumen
- Ink
- Paints
- Construction
- Foundry
- Asphalt
- Chemical
Ink:
Natural Asphalt, derived by solvent extraction of raw Gilsonite, arc used as carbon black wetting agents for black news ink and heat set and gravure ink. Gilsonite is readily soluble without heating in solvent especially in Xylene, Toluene, and Benzene and in the most chlorinated solvent.
Paints:
Natural Bitumen as been used for a long time in the paint industry. This material is used in paints with a bitumen base. The high nitrogen content of Gilsonite increases the adhesiveness and the stability of the Gilsonite against ultraviolet light. This product is mainly used in coating the exterior surface as also creating resistance against acids, it is used as the coating for car chassis and coating of metal structures.
Construction:
Many construction processes are controlled by comparing the desired product, conceived during design, to the product produced during construction. The asphalt pavement construction process is often controlled in this manner. Control is often based on testing of components and assemblies of materials, the construction process, and the finished asphalt pavement. The success of the asphalt pavement construction project is usually judged based on how well test results produced during construction compare with criteria considered representing the desired product conceived during design.
Foundry:
Mineral Bitumen is used as a carbonate additive in casting sand to make plates smoother on gray iron molds. Adding Natural Asphalt makes a better mold that imparts a smoother finish to the cast piece and is easier to remove from the cast item.
Asphalt:
The mixture of Natural Asphalt into road asphalt relates to a base stock composition comprising a blend of Mineral Bitumen and a rubber latex residue. The base stock may be used alone as a paving material or emulsified to form a Gilsonite emulsion having a variety of uses. The mixture of natural bitumen enforces asphalt against rutting and thickness of the asphalt with becoming thin.
Chemical:
Gilsonite in chemical combines with many other chemicals and materials that take advantage of its unique physical and chemical properties. Binder and coating applications in metallurgical, wood products, refractory and other industries further demonstrate the versatility and usefulness of this remarkable material.
Advantage of Natural Bitumen in Drilling Mud & Cementing
Drilling Mud:
- Adding Mineral Bitumen will create premium quality, multifunctional drilling fluid additive while reducing cost compare to other additives.
- Gilsonite in oil based drilling fluids as a fluid–loss control agent. Softening points.
- Natural Asphalt in water-based drilling fluids when pretreated with surfactant to stabilize the shale and to prevent circulation.
- It minimizes differential sticking and it also passes deep-water environmental planning and assessment regulation.
Cementing:
- Due to exceptional reaction with shale, it strengthens cement bonds to shale and sand.
- Filtration control, Natural Bitumen is a product that simultaneously controls loss circulation and strengthens the wellbore.
- No compromising compressive strengths and density control unlike fly ash or coal additives.
- Superior bonding improving zonal isolation.
