PG Bitumen 58-16

What is PG Bitumen 58-16?

PG Bitumen 58-16 is a category of bituminous binder assigned according to the Performance Grade System. The performance-grade classification of asphalt provides conformance-based categorization that may be conducted using a multiplicity of weather condition varieties. By the naming convention “58-16,” this means it could perform outstandingly at high temperature up to +58°C to the lower temperature up to -16°C, which should meet the specified low-temperature flexibility required and provide stability in rutting and resistance against fatigue, including thermal cracking over typical climatic conditions addressed within those temperatures.

PG 58-16 is universally used in road paving and construction very well, primarily in temperate climates. Its design for flexibility with strength, accommodating thermal stresses and heavy traffic loads with minimal distortion, makes it particularly suitable for highways, urban streets, and airport pavements susceptible to seasonal fluctuations in temperature extremes.

“PG 58-16: A Smart Choice for Roads in Moderate Climates”

PG 58-16 is a performance-grade bitumen designed for road construction and maintenance in regions with moderate climates. With an operational temperature range of 58°C (high temperatures) to -16°C (low temperatures), it ensures that road pavements can withstand temperature fluctuations and traffic loads effectively. Features such as resistance to rutting, thermal cracking, and fatigue make this bitumen an ideal choice for urban roads, highways, and rural roads. Using PG 58-16 not only enhances the durability and quality of road surfaces but also reduces maintenance costs, contributing to the long-term sustainability of infrastructure.

Application of PG Bitumen 58-16

The main applications for PG Bitumen 58-16 are in road construction and paving projects of various kinds but especially in areas with temperate climatic conditions. That is, the areas where pavement temperature normally ranges from -16°C in the coldest months to 58°C during the hottest periods; it thus serves as a very good binder for highways, urban streets, and rural roads that go through seasonal temperature variation but not extremes.

PG 58-16 can normally be used in flexible pavements, providing very good resistance to rutting, fatigue cracking, and thermal cracking. This balanced performance characteristic of the mix makes it suitable for use as a base and surface layer in asphalt pavements. It is also used for overlay applications in maintaining and improving existing road surfaces so as to be durable and last long under conventional traffic loads and climatic conditions.

Packing

Performance Grade (PG) 58-16 is available in 0.6 mm thickness, 180 kg net weight drums, 95 cm height and 45 cm diameter (+/- 3 kg operational tolerance).
